Galiwin’ku, NT

My name is Ezekiel Wopuwuy Baker. I am from Galiwinku, Elcho Island.

I grew up in a household with two cultures, which has shaped who I am. On my father’s side, there was a strong focus on working with kids – including taking them to the Darwin Show. These experiences helped me learn the value of culture, language, and community leadership from a young age.

Research and Community Work – Walking Together Program
In the Walking Together project, I’ve been doing point-of-care health checks and sharing health stories, especially about food – what we eat and how it affects the body. I use storytelling to explain how sugar and unhealthy foods can affect wellbeing, helping people make stronger choices.

Other Work Experience
I started working at the age of 16. I have worked:

  • At the local school in Galiwin’ku
  • In the local store, supporting retail and customer service
  • At Wanka Retreat, a resort in Bowaka

These jobs helped me build strong communication skills, a strong work ethic, and confidence working with others.

Education and Qualifications

  • Completed Year 12
  • Studied at Shepherdson College in Galiwin’ku
  • Continued further study in Townsville
  • Certificates in Retail (Cert I, II, III)

Training

  • First Aid
  • Point-of-Care Health Check Training

Why Research Is Important to Me
Research helps us understand what we are eating and what it does to the body. It also helped improve my own wellbeing. Sharing knowledge through Yolŋu ways of learning like storytelling that makes research more powerful for our communities.

What Makes Walking Together Work Well

  • Giving advice through story
  • Teaching about food and health in Yolŋu Matha
  • Sharing what sugar does to the body in ways that people understand

Special Skills

  • Translating health messages from English to Yolŋu Matha
  • Confident in talking with community members
  • Supporting people to understand and make changes in their health

Future Aspirations
In the future, I would like to become a school teacher or a health worker.
